Two strange ducks land on the driveway at Six Acres — and one of them is very sure she doesn't need anybody's help.

Reba and Dolly are Muscovy ducks: bare red faces, strong wings, and a habit of looking down their beaks at everyone. Reba does all the talking. Dolly only squeaks. When Turk nearly bumps into them, Reba gives him a scolding he never saw coming, and it's shy Tillie who steps forward to stand up for her friend. Tillie offers the shade, the soft grass, a place to rest — and Reba refuses every one. Then Benny arrives to announce that new arrivals require his approval. "How fortunate that we are not seeking it," says Reba. By the time Mr. Farmer closes the coop door, the sisters have settled in as if they'd always meant to be there. Nobody ever quite says so.
